Just like other non-western cultures, the collage of wisdom and insight in Ifa has been neglected over the years by the society, while other cultures like Buddhism, Tao, Hinduism, etc are largely accepted and studied. He then proceeds to recite it and get answers to the situation. Now what determines which verse that will be recited during consultation?īabalawo (Priest) uses Opele, 16 Ikin (16 palm nuts) and Opon Ifa (divination tray) to determine which of the 16 Odus addresses the situation at hand. The 16 Odus are: Ejiogbe, Oyekun meji, Iwori Meji, Idi Meji, Irosun Meji, Oworin Meji, Obara Meji, Okanran Meji, Ogunda Meji, Osa Meji, Ika Meji, Oturupon Meji, Otura Meji, Irete Meji, Oshe Meji, Ofun Meji. There are 16 Odus used in Odu and 256 in total used to profer solutions to life issues, and they all form the basis of all Yoruba divination. Ifa divination rites provide a path of communication between the spiritual world and the living. Odu Ifa are panegyrics used while making inquiries towards a matter. The Babalawo (priest) will in turn, inquire of God through Orunmila, to get clarifications to the inquiry through the use of Odu Ifa. When there are issues that are not clear to people, they go to Babalawo (chosen Priest) to contact Ifa (Oracle) for guidance.

Ifa (Oracle) is a system of religion which proffer answers to the unknown through divination. When Orunmila was to go back to heaven, he gave IFA (ORACLE) to the Babalawos (Priests), who have the power to sound the voice of Ifa. Orunmila was with God in heaven when the Earth is being formed, and is known as the God of wisdom. Orunmila was one of the dieties that descended to the earth after Obatala created the Earth. Today, I will be sharing the #history of Yoruba’s traditional religion - Ifa, which involves singing panegyrics to invoke the spirit of Orunmila and get answers to their petitions/ inquiries.
